Rio Camuy to Quebradillas Karst Backcountry Road

Karst country from caves to coast.

Moderate

This forgotten route winds through Puerto Rico’s northern karst region, connecting the underground world of Rio Camuy caves to the windswept cliffs near Quebradillas. The track follows old farm roads and cattle paths across sinkhole-riddled terrain where limestone has been carved into mogotes (haystack hills) and underground rivers. You’ll navigate around cenotes and through abandoned pineapple fields, passing the ruins of 19th-century haciendas before reaching coastal bluffs overlooking the Atlantic.

Moderate difficulty with rocky limestone surfaces and occasional deep ruts from heavy rains. Stock high-clearance 4WD handles it fine, though low-range helps in the steeper karst formations. Best tackled during dry season (December-April) when seasonal streams are fordable. No permits needed, but respect private property markers. Fuel up in Camuy – no services once you leave town. Scattered camping opportunities near coastal sections, but most of the route crosses private ranch land.
