Camuy River Underground Access Road
Underground river system through limestone karst caves
The Camuy River Underground Access Road drops you into Puerto Rico’s largest cave system, where the Camuy River carved a 10.2-mile network through Oligocene limestone over millions of years. This technical route starts near Lares and winds through dense karst topography to reach underground river access points and hidden cenotes that most tourists never see. The road crosses the Camuy River seven times before reaching the massive Clara de Empalme cave chamber, where you’ll need to wade through knee-deep water with your gear.
This is expert-level terrain demanding high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear. The limestone bedrock tears up tires, and flash floods can trap you underground during rainy season (May through November). Dry season offers the safest passage, but even then you’re looking at multiple water crossings and steep limestone ledges. Bring spelunking gear, waterproof bags, and plenty of fresh water — the underground segments offer no cell service and temperatures drop 15 degrees underground.
