Arecibo Observatory to Cueva Clara Circuit
Observatory to underground cathedral
Starting from the world-famous Arecibo Observatory (now collapsed but still accessible), this loop winds through Puerto Rico’s dramatic karst landscape of mogotes and sinkholes to reach Cueva Clara de Empalme. The route follows narrow farm roads that thread between towering limestone hills, crossing private cattle ranches and coffee plantations where you’ll need to open and close multiple gates. The highlight is Cueva Clara, a massive cave system with underground rivers and cathedral-like chambers that requires headlamps to explore properly.
This moderate trail needs high-clearance vehicles for rocky sections and muddy farm roads, especially after rain. The route crosses several small streams and navigates tight spots between mogotes where full-size trucks struggle. Dry season (January-March) offers the best conditions, but expect afternoon thunderstorms year-round. Respect private property and close all gates behind you. The combination of scientific history, unique geology, and underground exploration makes this a distinctly Puerto Rican adventure that showcases the island’s diverse landscapes.
