Maine’s Down East Sunrise Trail 4×4 Access Route

Abandoned railroad grade through Maine's remote wilderness

Moderate

Built on the bones of the old Calais Branch Railroad, this 87-mile former rail corridor cuts through Maine’s most remote wilderness from Ellsworth to Calais. What makes it special for 4×4 drivers are the dozen side access roads that branch off into active logging territory, including the notorious Bog Brook crossing at mile marker 34—a half-mile stretch of corduroyed swamp road that swallows trucks whole during spring thaw. The rail grade itself is smooth gravel, but these connector roads are where Maine shows its teeth.

Plan on moderate difficulty with a few expert-level obstacles, especially the Machias River ford and the technical rock garden near Wesley. High-clearance 4WD is mandatory, and serious mud tires help when the corduroy logs shift under load. Best tackled August through October when water tables drop, though even then carry recovery gear and extra food—this is genuine middle-of-nowhere territory. No permits needed but respect active logging operations and yield to loaded timber trucks. What you get is access to some of Maine’s most pristine fishing waters and camping spots that see maybe a dozen visitors per year.
