Schoodic Woods Loop Road
Acadia's hidden coastal granite loop
Schoodic Woods Loop Road winds eight miles through the only section of Acadia National Park on the mainland, far from Bar Harbor’s crowds. The one-way gravel road starts at the Schoodic Woods Campground and climbs through mixed forest before dropping to dramatic granite ledges overlooking Winter Harbor and the Schoodic Peninsula. The route’s highlight is the technical descent to Schoodic Point, where pink granite meets the Atlantic in spectacular fashion, and the optional spur to Blueberry Hill offers panoramic views of Mount Desert Island across Frenchman Bay.
Easy to moderate difficulty makes this accessible to most vehicles, though low-clearance cars should skip the optional spurs to avoid scraping on granite outcroppings. Stock SUVs handle the main loop easily, but watch for loose gravel on descents and seasonal frost heaves. Open year-round but best April through November when campground facilities are available. No permits required beyond standard park entry fees. The reward is experiencing Acadia’s rugged coast without the crowds, with excellent dispersed camping at Schoodic Woods and tide pooling opportunities that rival anything on Mount Desert Island.
