Estrada da Graciosa Serra do Mar Atlantic Forest Circuit
Historic slave-built road through rainforest
Built by slaves in the 1870s as the Graciosa Railroad route, this cobblestone and dirt track winds 30 kilometers through some of Brazil’s last intact Atlantic Forest. The route drops 900 meters from the Paraná plateau through dense cloud forest, past abandoned railway tunnels and stone bridges, with the highlight being the historic Vila Velha sandstone formations and the spectacular Marumbi Peak viewpoint overlooking the coastal plain.
This is an easy to moderate route suitable for most high-clearance vehicles, though wet cobblestones can be extremely slippery. The forest receives over 2,000mm of rain annually, so avoid the wettest months of December-February when landslides are common. No permits required, but fuel up in Curitiba as services are limited. Multiple camping spots exist near the Marumbi State Park headquarters. The payoff is driving through one of Brazil’s most biodiverse ecosystems with excellent birdwatching and waterfall access.

Can a stock Hilux or high-clearance 2WD truck handle the Estrada da Graciosa?
Yes. The minimum requirement is high-clearance 2WD, and a stock Hilux, Ranger, or similar truck will manage the mixed surface without issue. 4WD helps on wet sections but isn't mandatory.
Is the trail passable in December through March?
It can be driven but it's the rainy season in Paraná — the Atlantic Forest gets hammered with precipitation and the water crossings run significantly higher. April through November is the reliable window; August and September are particularly good.
Do I need a permit to drive Estrada da Graciosa, and is there an entry fee?
The road is managed by Instituto Chico Mendes (ICMBio) and is part of the Serra do Mar State Park corridor. No advance permit is required to drive through, but if you're camping inside the park boundaries, check current ICMBio regulations — rules around dispersed camping in Atlantic Forest protection zones can change.
What's the hardest section and what actually makes it technical?
The steeper descents toward the coast are where things get honest — loose gravel over clay turns greasy after rain, and some of the water crossings have uneven rocky bottoms with no defined line. Nothing that should stop a capable driver, but don't rush the downhill sections if it's been wet.
How far is the nearest fuel stop, and should I top off before starting?
Top off in Curitiba before you leave — it's the last reliable fuel before the route drops toward Morretes and Paranaguá on the coast. Cell service is spotty through the forest, so don't count on navigation apps to find a pump mid-route.
