Edisto River Sand Ridge Trail
Ancient coastline through cypress cathedral
This 18-mile sand ridge trail follows prehistoric beach ridges that once marked the Atlantic coastline 40,000 years ago. The route winds through Givhans Ferry State Park and connects to backcountry logging roads, crossing the Edisto River at two historic ferry sites. Deep sand sections challenge traction control while towering bald cypress trees create cathedral-like canopies overhead, and the Jacksonboro Swamp crossing requires careful navigation during high water periods.
Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD with sand-rated tires essential for the sugar sand stretches. Best tackled during dry months from November through April when water levels drop and sand firms up. Dispersed camping available along the ridge with spectacular sunrise views over the blackwater river system. The reward is pure Lowcountry wilderness — alligators, wild turkeys, and some of the most pristine swampland left in South Carolina.
