Webb Wildlife Center Sand Hills Management Road Network
Sandhills where quail calls echo through longleaf
Webb Wildlife Center’s 12,000-acre sand hills preserve harbors a maze of management roads originally carved to restore bobwhite quail habitat and longleaf pine ecosystems. The main circuit runs 24 miles from the check station through fire-maintained savannas where wild turkeys strut and fox squirrels chatter in ancient longleaf canopies. Deep sand challenges traction on the notorious Quail Ridge Loop, while Turkey Creek bottomland requires careful timing between seasonal floods.
Easy to moderate difficulty depends entirely on recent rain and sand conditions—aired-down tires mandatory in dry seasons. Wildlife center permits required during hunting seasons (October-February), but spring and summer offer unrestricted access for $5 daily fee. Primitive camping allowed by permit only. The authentic experience is witnessing longleaf pine ecosystem restoration in action, with prescribed burns creating the park-like forest structure that once covered millions of Southern acres.
