Smith Falls Canyon Trail

Nebraska's tallest waterfall via remote canyon run

Moderate

Smith Falls Canyon Trail cuts through some of the most remote country in the Nebraska Sandhills, following old ranch roads and cattle trails to reach the state’s tallest waterfall at 63 feet. The route winds through rolling grassland before dropping into the Niobrara River valley, where Minnechaduza Creek has carved a deep canyon through the sandstone. You’ll cross the creek multiple times as the trail narrows, with the final approach requiring careful navigation through loose sand and rocky creek beds.

This is a moderate trail best suited for high-clearance vehicles with good ground clearance and decent tires. The creek crossings are typically shallow but can be tricky after heavy rains. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though summer heat can be brutal. No permits required, but you’re crossing private ranch land by permission – respect gates and livestock. Dispersed camping along the Niobrara River makes this a solid overnight adventure, and the waterfall payoff is worth every sandy mile.
