This 116,000-acre forest represents one of the largest hand-planted forests in the world, established in 1902 as part of Charles Bessey’s vision to prove trees could grow in the Nebraska Sandhills. Miles of sandy forest roads wind through planted pines and native grasslands, offering numerous pullouts and clearings for dispersed camping. The forest service allows 14-day camping throughout most of the forest, with fire restrictions typically in place May through September.
Access from Highway 2 near Halsey, then follow forest service roads deeper into the timber. Roads are mostly sandy – high-clearance helps but not required in dry conditions. Can get muddy after rain. No facilities except vault toilets at a few trailheads. Popular with hunters in fall, quieter spring through summer.
