Sandhills Discovery Route

America's great grassland crossing.

Easy

The Sandhills Discovery Route traverses 180 miles of Nebraska’s unique grass-stabilized sand dune ecosystem, following minimum-maintenance roads that connect century-old ranch headquarters across America’s largest remaining prairie. Starting near Valentine, the route winds through the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge’s wetlands before climbing into the rolling dunes where Hereford cattle graze slopes that haven’t seen a plow in 150 years. Key waypoints include the ghost town of Brownlee and the historic Spade Ranch, where Buffalo Bill Cody once ran cattle operations.

Easy to moderate difficulty suits any stock vehicle with decent ground clearance, though sandy two-tracks can challenge inexperienced drivers. Summer months offer the best road conditions, but spring brings spectacular wildflower displays and migrating sandhill cranes. No permits needed, but this is working ranch country—respect private property and livestock operations. Camping allowed on public lands and designated areas. Fuel and supplies available in Valentine, Ainsworth, and Long Pine, with 60+ mile stretches between services. Come for the solitude and some of the darkest night skies in America.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock pickup truck handle the Sandhills Discovery Route?

Yes, any stock high-clearance vehicle can complete this route. The sand roads are well-packed and maintained, though you'll want good all-terrain tires for traction.

Is the trail accessible in winter or should I stick to summer months?

Best traveled May through September when weather is stable and ranch roads are maintained. Winter brings snow drifts and impassable conditions across the open grasslands.

Do I need permits to drive through the Sandhills Discovery Route?

No permits required, but respect private ranch land boundaries and stay on designated roads. Some sections cross private property with public easements.

What's the most challenging part of this 180-mile route?

Navigation through unmarked ranch road intersections and soft sand pockets after rain. The terrain itself is easy, but getting lost in the vastness is the real challenge.

How far can I go between gas stations on this route?

Plan for 120+ mile stretches without services between small towns. Carry extra fuel and water since cell service is spotty for calling help if you run dry.
