Buffalo Creek Ranch Road

Ranch roads through Nebraska's authentic cattle country

Moderate

Buffalo Creek Ranch Road cuts through 35 miles of working ranch country in the heart of Cherry County’s sandhills, where you’ll share the trail with actual cowboys moving cattle between pastures. The route follows historic ranch roads from Highway 97 north of Valentine, winding through private ranch land with permission-based access through multiple gates. Expect to encounter Buffalo Creek’s sandy-bottom crossing at mile 18, which can be tricky after spring snowmelt or summer storms.

This is moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossings and soft sand sections, though stock vehicles handle it fine in dry conditions. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, but check with local ranchers about access permissions and gate protocols. You’ll experience authentic Nebraska ranch life, massive sky views, and some of the most remote country in the state. Dispersed camping is possible with landowner permission, and fuel up in Valentine before heading out.
