Mark Twain National Forest Forest Road 147 Swan Creek Technical Loop

Steep CCC-era forest roads through Missouri's roughest hollows.

Difficult

Forest Road 147 drops into Swan Creek hollow like a runaway logging truck, the remnants of 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps bridges still visible through the hardwood canopy. This 12-mile loop cuts through some of the steepest terrain in Mark Twain National Forest’s Ava District, with grades that’ll have you riding the brake pedal and creek crossings that turn into axle-deep mud wallows after spring rains. The old CCC camp ruins at mile 7 mark the halfway point where the trail switches from descent to a lung-busting climb out of the hollow.

This is genuine difficult terrain requiring experienced drivers and vehicles with low-range gearing, skid plates, and aggressive tread. Wet conditions turn this from challenging to dangerous, so stick to dry weather May through September. No permits but check fire restrictions during drought. The reward is solitude in Missouri’s most rugged backcountry, excellent dispersed camping along Swan Creek, and a glimpse of Depression-era work camps slowly being reclaimed by the Ozark forest.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler make it through this loop?

Yes, a stock Wrangler with 4-low will handle it, but you'll need good spotting on the steepest CCC road sections and rock ledges. Armor plating recommended for the undercarriage.

Is Forest Road 147 open during winter months?

Technically open year-round, but snow and ice make the steep grades extremely dangerous from December through March. Best avoided until spring thaw is complete.

Do I need permits to run the Swan Creek Technical Loop?

No permits required - it's open Forest Service road. Just follow Leave No Trace principles and stay on designated trails.

What's the hardest obstacle on this trail?

The steep CCC-era road climbs out of the hollows - some grades hit 25%+ with loose rock and ruts. Low range and momentum management are essential.

How deep are the creek crossings typically?

Most crossings are 12-18 inches deep during normal flow, but can rise quickly after rain. Check weather upstream before attempting - flash floods are real in these hollows.
