Ruby Valley Mining District Road
Ghost towns and abandoned mines in Ruby Mountains backcountry
This network of mining roads cuts through the eastern flank of the Ruby Mountains, connecting a dozen ghost towns and abandoned mining claims scattered across Ruby Valley. Starting from the town of Ruby Valley, the main route follows Harrison Pass Road past the ruins of Overland City before branching into a spider web of two-tracks that explore camps like Buel, Harrison, and the remnants of the Ruby Hill District. The road to Camp Ruby offers some of the best preserved ruins, with stone foundations and rusted equipment still visible among the sagebrush.
Moderate difficulty with some rocky sections and washouts that require good ground clearance and careful tire placement. A stock 4WD with skid plates will handle most sections, though a few spurs demand more technical driving around boulders and steep grades. Summer through early fall offers the best conditions, with winter snow closing higher elevations. No permits required, but bring extra fuel and water—services are 50+ miles away. The payoff is solitude among Nevada’s mining history, with expansive views across the Great Basin and plenty of dispersed camping opportunities.
