Susquehannock State Forest Denton Hill Fire Tower Circuit
Highest fire tower in Pennsylvania's big woods
This remote fire tower road climbs through some of Pennsylvania’s wildest country to the 2424-foot Denton Hill Tower, offering 360-degree views across the endless Allegheny ridges. The route begins off Forest Road 121 near Cherry Springs State Park, following steep timber roads through deep hemlock groves and boulder fields. The final push to the tower requires navigating washed-out switchbacks and loose shale that has claimed more than one undercarriage over the years.
Difficult terrain demands experienced drivers with high-clearance 4WD, recovery gear, and spare belts—the steep grades and sharp rocks are hard on equipment. Best tackled May through October when snow doesn’t block the higher elevations. No permits required, but this is serious backcountry with zero cell service and the nearest fuel 45 minutes away in Coudersport. The reward is standing above Pennsylvania’s largest roadless area, where endless ridges roll toward the horizon like green ocean swells.
