Spitzkoppe Circuit
Granite giants and ancient art in the Namib
The Spitzkoppe’s granite domes rise 1,728 meters from the Namib’s gravel plains like sleeping giants, demanding respect from every overlander who tackles this technical circuit. Ancient San bushmen left their mark here in ochre and charcoal—rock paintings that’ve watched the desert breathe for millennia. The route threads between house-sized granite boulders and demands careful line choice through loose rock sections, especially around the notorious Rock Arch where many underestimate the clearance needed.
This is no Sunday drive—stock vehicles will scrape, and low-profile tires will suffer on the sharp granite. High-clearance 4WD with skid plates and a good spare tire setup are non-negotiable. April through October offers the best conditions before summer heat makes camping unbearable. Water is scarce, so carry extra for both vehicle and crew. The reward? Sunrise over granite spires and some of the clearest night skies in Africa, far from any light pollution.
