Skeleton Coast Shipwreck Trail

Where ships go to die in desert sand

Difficult

The Eduard Bohlen sits 400 meters inland from the Atlantic, a testament to how the Skeleton Coast devours everything foolish enough to venture here unprepared. This brutal coastal traverse runs north from Swakopmund through a moonscape of shifting sand dunes, salt pans, and shipwreck graveyards where fog-blinded vessels met their end against the Benguela Current. The route passes the Dunedin Star wreckage and countless seal colonies while threading between towering dunes that can swallow a Land Cruiser whole if you pick the wrong line.

Difficult rating with sections pushing extreme due to deep sand and complete isolation — aired-down tires, sand ladders, and aggressive tread patterns are non-negotiable. The coastal fog can reduce visibility to zero without warning, and getting stuck means a potential multi-day wait for rescue from Windhoek. Best attempted March through November when seal pupping season offers wildlife viewing to offset the mechanical punishment. Carry spare parts, 200+ liters of fuel, and water for a week minimum. The payoff is witnessing one of Africa’s most hostile yet hauntingly beautiful environments where desert literally meets ocean.
