Namib Desert Welwitschia to Brandberg — Damaraland Volcanic Desert High Crossing via the Ugab River Terraces

Ancient plants, black lava, red granite giant.

Difficult

The Welwitschia mirabilis plants along the Swakop River are already ancient when you start — some specimens live two thousand years and look like something washed up from another planet. From the Welwitschia Washplain north of Swakopmund, this track crosses the Moon Landscape and pushes north into Damaraland along the Ugab River terraces, past the Burnt Mountain volcanic formation and the ghostly organ pipes of dolerite columns at Twyfelfontein, before climbing toward the base of the Brandberg massif. The Brandberg — at 2,573 metres Namibia’s highest — rises out of the gravel plains like a red-granite island, and the track to Numas Ravine and the White Lady rock art site is a genuine technical approach on loose rock and sandy wash.

This is a Difficult-rated desert crossing requiring a high-clearance 4WD — a stock Land Cruiser or Defender with a long-range tank is ideal because fuel from Swakopmund has to last until Uis, some 280 km of rough track away. Carry minimum 40 litres of water; desert temperatures top 45°C in summer. The route passes through communal conservancy land; a permit from Damara-Uis Conservancy or NWR is required for some sections. Best season is April to October. The reward is three of Namibia’s most surreal geological features in one continuous desert drive.

Frequently asked questions

Can a lifted Tacoma or stock Land Cruiser handle this trail, or do I need a dedicated expedition build?

A stock Land Cruiser 76/78/79 or equivalent high-clearance 4WD with a long-range tank will manage, but you need genuine low-range capability — the volcanic rock sections and Ugab River terrace climbs punish anything less. A lifted Tacoma with all-terrain tires can do it, but recovery gear and a second vehicle are non-negotiable on this route.

When is this trail passable and what happens if you go outside the April–October window?

The rainy season (November–March) can flood the Ugab River crossings and turn the sand sections into impassable mud — tracks that look fine on satellite can disappear entirely. Stick to April–October; even early April can have residual wet conditions, so check recent reports before committing.

Do I need permits for this route, and who do I actually contact to get them?

Yes — sections of this route cross NWR-managed land and the Doro !Nawas Communal Conservancy, both of which require entry permits or fees. Contact Namibia Wildlife Resorts at nwr.com.na and NACSO at nacso.org.na before departure; showing up at the boundary without paperwork can get you turned back.

What's the hardest section and what specifically makes it technical?

The Ugab River terrace crossings are the crux — loose black lava rubble, blind ledge drops, and sections with no defined track where you're picking lines across volcanic fields at elevation. The climb toward Brandberg adds steep switchbacks on fractured granite where a misjudged line can put a wheel off a ledge with no easy recovery point nearby.

How much fuel range do I actually need for this 280 km route, and is there any resupply?

Plan for at minimum 400 km of fuel capacity — low-range crawling through rock and sand burns fuel fast, and there is zero resupply between the Welwitschia plains and Uis at the far end. Uis has a basic fuel station but verify it's operational before you go; carry jerry cans regardless.
