Cherry Springs State Park Dark Sky Campground
Cherry Springs sits at 2,300 feet elevation in the middle of Susquehannock State Forest, designated as an International Dark Sky Park for its exceptional night skies. The campground offers 30 primitive sites scattered through open meadows and forest edge — no hookups, just fire rings and picnic tables. Vault toilets and hand-pump water wells serve the area. This place comes alive after dark when serious astronomers set up telescopes and casual stargazers spread blankets.
Access requires a 10-mile drive on PA Route 44 through state forest — paved but winding mountain road. Sites fill up fast during new moon weekends and meteor showers, so book ahead. Open May through October. Red flashlights only after dark to preserve night vision for everyone.
