Sinnemahoning State Park Kettle Creek Gorge Circuit

Creek crossings through Pennsylvania elk country

Moderate

This rugged circuit winds through the heart of Pennsylvania’s elk range, following old logging roads and seasonal tracks through Sinnemahoning State Park and surrounding state forest lands. The route crosses Kettle Creek multiple times via rock fords that can range from ankle-deep riffles to challenging crossings during high water, with the most technical section running along Bennett Branch where the trail skirts massive sandstone outcrops and navigates through dense mountain laurel thickets.

Rated moderate to difficult depending on water levels and season, this route demands high-clearance 4WD with good approach and departure angles for the creek crossings. Best conditions occur from late summer through fall when water levels are typically lower. Spring can be impassable due to snowmelt and rain. Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the area, and the remote location offers excellent opportunities for elk viewing, especially during dawn and dusk hours. Bring recovery gear and expect to get muddy — this is wild Pennsylvania at its finest.
