Pine Creek Gorge West Rim Technical Loop
Expert rim running above Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon
This unmarked route follows old logging roads along the western rim of Pine Creek Gorge, Pennsylvania’s answer to the Grand Canyon. Starting near Colton Point State Park, the trail immediately drops down a brutal shale descent that has claimed more than one oil pan before threading through dense mountain laurel thickets. The technical highlight comes at mile 8 where drivers must navigate the Devils Elbow – a near-vertical rock shelf that requires precise wheel placement and a spotter to avoid a 50-foot drop into Pine Creek.
Expert difficulty only – this route demands serious technical driving skills, full armor, and recovery gear. Wet conditions turn the shale slopes into skating rinks, making summer the only safe season for most drivers. Access requires crossing private timber land, so respect posted signs and close all gates. No camping permitted along the route itself, but Colton Point offers facilities. Cell service is nonexistent in the gorge. The reward is unobstructed views down into the 1,000-foot-deep canyon and some of the most challenging 4×4 terrain on the East Coast.
