The service road network supporting the famous Black Forest Trail opens up some of the most spectacular and remote country in north-central Pennsylvania, where the Civilian Conservation Corps built roads that still challenge modern 4WDs with their steep grades and seasonal washouts. These interconnected forest roads provide access to the plateau country above Pine Creek Gorge, including the challenging climb to Naval Run Vista and the technical descent to Slide Run where hikers cross the infamous swinging bridge. The route includes multiple access points to the 42-mile Black Forest Trail, with the main service road running from Slate Run through the heart of the forest.
Moderate difficulty with a few technical sections requiring good throttle control and decent ground clearance, especially at Pine Creek and Naval Run crossings. Most stock 4WD vehicles handle the route fine in dry conditions, but spring snowmelt and summer storms can create challenging mud holes and washouts. Yes. A stock 4WD high-clearance vehicle is the minimum you need. The mixed surface roads and creek crossings are manageable stock, but decent all-terrain tires help when conditions are wet or muddy.
When does the trail become impassable or dangerous?
Late November through April is risky — snow, ice, and frozen/thawed ground turn these forest service roads into a muddy mess. Stick to May through October for the most reliable conditions.
Do I need a permit to run this route or camp overnight?
No permit is required to drive the service road network. Dispersed camping is allowed in Tiadaghton State Forest under Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry rules — camp at least 200 feet from roads, trails, and water sources, and stays are limited to a cumulative 14 days in any one spot per year.
How serious are the water crossings, and what's the hardest section?
The creek crossings are moderate — typically shallow to mid-axle depth after normal rainfall. They can rise quickly after heavy rain, so check conditions before you go. No single crossing is a showstopper in a stock high-clearance 4WD, but don't attempt them in flood conditions.

Expect zero cell service throughout the entire 32 miles — this is a no-service zone, full stop. The nearest gas is roughly 20-25 miles away in Wellsboro or Waterville, so top off before you drop into Slate Run.
