Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon rail-trail adventure
The Pine Creek Rail Trail cuts through Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon, following the abandoned Jersey Shore, Pine Creek and Buffalo Railway grade that once hauled lumber and coal through this massive gorge. The 62-mile crushed limestone trail runs from Wellsboro Junction north to Jersey Shore, with the most dramatic section between Ansonia and Blackwell where 1,000-foot canyon walls rise on both sides. Pine Creek rushes alongside much of the route, and the old railway bridges at Darling Run and Tiadaghton Creek offer prime photo spots above the whitewater.
This is an easy gravel ride suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though the surface can get washboard rough after heavy rain. Best tackled April through October when the trees show color and creek levels are manageable. No permits required, but fuel up in Wellsboro beforehand — it’s 30 miles to the nearest gas once you’re committed. Multiple access points let you sample sections, but the full run gives you the complete Pennsylvania wilderness experience that made this gorge famous.

Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner run this trail without any mods?
Yes. The trail is a converted railroad grade, so it's flat and wide with a compacted gravel surface. A stock high-clearance 2WD truck handles it without issue — no lift or skid plates needed.
When does the trail open and is it accessible in winter?
Best season is April through October. Winter access is not guaranteed — snow and mud can make sections impassable, and some facilities close. Spring flooding from Pine Creek can also temporarily wash out or flood low sections near the creek.
Do I need a permit or is there a fee to drive the trail?
No permit is required and there's no entry fee. The trail is managed by Pennsylvania DCNR and is open to the public. Some adjacent state park facilities may have separate day-use fees.
What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?
There's no genuinely hard section — this is an easy gravel rail trail with minimal elevation change. The main challenge is length (62 miles one-way) and remoteness; if something breaks down, you're a long way from help with spotty cell service the entire corridor.
Is there any water or gas along the trail, or do I need to pre-load everything in Wellsboro?
Fuel up in Wellsboro before you head in — there are no gas stations along the 62-mile corridor. Potable water is available at trailhead facilities but not reliably along the route, so carry what you need. Dispersed camping is permitted in the gorge, but plan your food and fuel as if you're going fully remote.
