Taylor Park Road

Colorado's highest ghost town passage

Moderate

Taylor Park Road cuts a rugged line through Colorado’s Sawatch Range, connecting the resort towns of Gunnison and Buena Vista via a historic mining route that peaks at 11,928 feet on Cottonwood Pass. The route threads through Taylor Park’s sprawling alpine meadows — one of Colorado’s largest high-altitude parks — before threading the needle between 14,000-foot peaks on both sides. Tin Cup, a well-preserved ghost town at mile 18, serves as the route’s centerpiece, complete with original mining structures and a cemetery that tells the story of Colorado’s silver boom.

This is a moderate high-clearance route suitable for most 4WD vehicles, though the western approach from Taylor Reservoir can get rutty after storms. Summer and fall offer the best conditions, with snow typically blocking the pass from October through May. No permits required, but fuel up in either Gunnison or Buena Vista — there’s nothing in between except history and scenery. The payoff is pure Colorado: 360-degree views of the Collegiate Peaks, excellent dispersed camping, and a genuine sense of traversing the Continental Divide spine that built the American West.
