Lonesome Highway — Hartman Rocks to Cochetopa Hills via Saguache Creek Divide

Hartman Rocks Recreation Area sits just southwest of Gunnison and is famous among mountain bikers, but most rigs rolling through don’t realize the BLM road network continues west through volcanic badlands and into the Cochetopa Hills — one of Colorado’s most overlooked overland zones. The route west via Saguache Creek Road crosses open sage benchlands and drops into the Cochetopa drainage before climbing again to divide views that take in the La Garita Mountains to the south and the Fossil Ridge Wilderness to the north. Los Caminos Antiguos traces this corridor historically — Spanish traders used these passes as far back as the 1700s. The roads are wide dirt two-track for the most part, but the creek crossings on Saguache Creek can run fast in June, and the Cochetopa Hills section has loose volcanic gravel shelf roads that’ll unsettle a top-heavy rig.
High clearance is the minimum; 4WD preferred for the hill sections and any wet-weather driving — this volcanic soil turns to grease in rain. Best season is July through October. No permits required.
