Backcountry Discovery Route – Nevada
Nevada's most remote backcountry corridor
The Nevada Backcountry Discovery Route spans 650 miles from the California border near Lake Tahoe to the Utah border, threading through some of the most desolate and beautiful country in the Lower 48. This route passes through historic mining districts, ancient lake beds, and mountain passes that haven’t seen traffic since the Pony Express days. Key waypoints include the ghost town of Berlin, the Toiyabe Crest Trail crossing, and the technical descent into Big Smoky Valley where cellular service disappears for 100+ miles at a stretch.
Moderate to difficult depending on weather and chosen route variants. Stock high-clearance 4WD minimum, but full-size trucks handle most sections fine. Recovery gear essential for the sand and clay sections that turn treacherous when wet. Best tackled May through October when high passes are clear. Fuel range of 300+ miles required between Tonopah and Austin. Water sources scarce — carry 2+ gallons per person per day. This isn’t a trail you do casually; it’s a commitment to real remoteness where self-reliance isn’t optional.
