Chapleau Crown Game Preserve Backroads

Remote logging roads through Ontario's largest preserve

Difficult

Deep in Northern Ontario, the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve covers 7,000 square kilometers of wilderness laced with active and abandoned logging roads that penetrate country most people never see. Established in 1925 as the world’s largest game preserve, this network of rough tracks leads to pristine lakes like Missinaibi and Groundhog, past stands of old-growth forest the loggers somehow missed. The main access routes follow old railroad grades and timber haul roads, crossing dozens of creeks on makeshift bridges that test your nerve and your vehicle’s clearance.

This is serious backcountry requiring high-clearance 4WD, recovery gear, and self-reliance. Roads range from decent gravel to technical rock crawling over granite outcrops. Summer means mud and bugs; fall brings the best conditions before winter lockdown. No cell service, no facilities, no backup. Carry everything including spare parts. You get absolute solitude, world-class fishing, and the chance to camp where only loggers and trappers have been. It’s old-school Canadian wilderness adventure.
