Whiteshell Trail Network
Shield country granite maze in Manitoba's wilderness
The Whiteshell Trail Network winds through 2,729 square kilometers of Manitoba’s oldest provincial park, where billion-year-old granite outcroppings emerge from boreal forest like sleeping giants. These interconnected logging roads and ATV trails lead to hidden lakes, ancient petroforms, and the West Hawk Lake impact crater—the deepest lake in Manitoba formed by a meteorite strike. The network includes challenging rock gardens, deep sand pockets, and creek crossings that can trap the unprepared, with routes ranging from mild gravel roads to technical single-track requiring winch points.
This moderate trail system suits stock 4WD vehicles on main routes, but technical spurs demand high clearance, skid plates, and recovery gear. Summer brings blackflies and variable trail conditions from spring washouts, while fall offers the best combination of stable trails and spectacular colors. No permits required, but respect for Indigenous sacred sites is mandatory. Dispersed camping is allowed throughout the park, making this an ideal base camp for exploring Manitoba’s shield country. The reward is solitude in some of Canada’s oldest geological formations.
