Burro Mesa Pour-Off Technical Challenge
Big Bend's ultimate rock crawling gauntlet
This is Big Bend’s nastiest piece of legitimate backcountry – a mile-long gauntlet of limestone ledges, off-camber descents, and a mandatory pour-off descent that’ll pucker your seat. The route drops into Burro Mesa through a slot canyon barely wider than a full-size pickup, with vertical walls that scrape your mirrors and no room to turn around. Park rangers call it “the washing machine” because vehicles get tossed around like laundry when drivers misjudge the angle on the 45-degree limestone steps.
Expert-level only. You need serious armor, winch points front and rear, and experienced spotters who know desert rock. Articulation is everything here – without it, you’re walking out. Best attempted November through March when temps won’t cook you during recovery. No permits but register at the ranger station so they know where to find your carcass. Water and fuel in Study Butte, 12 miles back. What you get is bragging rights among the hardest-core Big Bend regulars and some of the most dramatic desert scenery in Texas.
