Shawnee National Forest Bell Smith Springs Technical Canyon Route
Sandstone canyons in Illinois backcountry.
Hidden in Pope County’s most remote corner, this technical route accesses Bell Smith Springs through a maze of forgotten Forest Service roads originally cut for timber operations in the 1940s. The trail threads between towering sandstone bluffs and crosses Mill Branch twice before reaching the natural swimming holes and boxed canyon that make this area legendary among southern Illinois locals. Loose sandstone shelves and narrow passages between house-sized boulders demand precise wheel placement and spotting.
Difficult terrain requiring experienced drivers and vehicles with rock sliders and underbody protection. The final mile drops 300 feet through a boulder field that claims oil pans regularly. Best tackled in late summer when water levels are lowest and rocks provide maximum grip. Forest Service roads remain open year-round, but spring flooding makes creek crossings dangerous. Bring recovery gear and plan a full day for the 12-mile loop. The payoff is pristine canyon country that feels more like Utah than Illinois.
