Fort Massac State Park Campground
Fort Massac sits right on the Ohio River with 50 campsites spread across wooded loops near the reconstructed 1794 frontier fort. The riverside sites offer direct river access, while interior spots provide more shade under mature hardwoods. Fire rings and picnic tables at every site, with modern restrooms and showers in the campground. Gets busy on summer weekends but quieter mid-week.
Access is off US-45 about 3 miles west of Metropolis — all paved roads. The fort museum and visitor center are worth a stop for regional history. River access makes this a solid water source and staging point for exploring southern Illinois trails. Open year-round but water may be turned off in winter months.
