Cache River State Natural Area
This 14,794-acre preserve protects the largest remaining tract of old-growth bottomland forest in Illinois, complete with thousand-year-old bald cypress trees and tupelo swamps that feel more like Louisiana than the Midwest. The wetlands harbor rare species like prothonotary warblers and river otters, while the upland areas offer hiking trails through oak-hickory forests. Multiple trailheads provide access, with the Section 8 Woods trail being the most popular for its ancient cypress grove.
Access is via paved county roads, but some parking areas are gravel. Spring brings flooding that can close some trails, while summer means thick mosquitoes — pack repellent. Fall offers the best hiking conditions with colorful foliage and fewer bugs.
