Cache River State Natural Area Buttonland Swamp Trail
A half-mile boardwalk winds through some of Illinois’ oldest forest — massive tupelo and bald cypress trees that predate European settlement. The swamp feels primeval, with standing water reflecting ancient trunks and wildlife sounds echoing through the canopy. Parking for a dozen vehicles at the trailhead, with interpretive signs explaining the ecosystem. Popular with photographers during fall color season and spring wildflower blooms.
Access via gravel Buttonland Road off Route 37 near Cypress. The boardwalk is accessible year-round but can be slippery when wet. Peak wildlife activity at dawn and dusk — great for spotting herons, wood ducks, and the occasional river otter. No facilities beyond the parking area.
