Crabtree Creek Road to Mount Mitchell Summit Approach
Backdoor route to the East's highest summit
Crabtree Creek Road starts as an innocent gravel forest road but quickly transforms into a rough, rocky climb toward Mount Mitchell’s 6,684-foot summit. Originally built as a logging railroad grade in the early 1900s, the route follows Crabtree Creek through old-growth spruce and Fraser fir forests, passing the skeletal remains of trees killed by woolly adelgid infestations. The steepest section climbs 800 feet in less than a mile, with loose rock and exposed roots creating traction challenges.
High-clearance 4WD is mandatory, with low-range gearing essential for the steep, technical sections. Weather changes fast at elevation — what starts as a sunny morning can turn into dense fog and freezing temperatures by afternoon, even in summer. No camping allowed within Mount Mitchell State Park boundaries, but dispersed camping is permitted along lower forest roads. The payoff is reaching North Carolina’s roof through your own effort, earning views across five states from the observation deck.
