Forest Service Road 475B Linville River Gorge Technical Loop
Granite hell in North Carolina's Grand Canyon
The Linville River cuts through ancient Precambrian granite like God took an axe to the Blue Ridge, and FSR 475B drops you straight into that chaos. This technical descent starts at Wiseman’s View area and winds down granite shelves and loose talus for 3.2 miles to the river bottom, where you’ll ford the Linville River twice before connecting to the backside trail system. The route includes the infamous “Stairway to Hell” section — a series of granite ledges that’ll test your wheel placement and your nerves in equal measure.
This is expert-level wheeling that demands rock sliders, skid plates, and serious low-range gearing. The granite gets slick when wet, making this a fair-weather trail only — April through October when river levels are manageable. No permits required, but the Pisgah National Forest manages it strictly for day use only. Expect to spend 4-6 hours completing the loop, and bring recovery gear because the exit climb back to FSR 475 is just as brutal as the descent.
