Big Bend National Park River Road East
Desert borderland track to thermal springs
River Road East cuts through 13 miles of Chihuahuan Desert badlands where limestone shelves drop toward the Rio Grande’s muddy waters. This rough track passes the ruins of Johnson’s Ranch, a failed homestead from the 1930s, before winding through dramatic canyon country where black volcanic dikes slice through cream-colored limestone. The road deteriorates significantly after mile 8, demanding careful line choice through softball-sized rocks and loose scree slopes that’ll punish careless throttle work.
This is solid intermediate 4WD territory requiring stock high-clearance with skid plates and good tires. Sharp limestone chunks and embedded rocks make punctures a real threat, so carry a full repair kit and compressor. Best tackled November through March when desert temps won’t cook you during inevitable trail repairs. The payoff is Hot Springs, where natural thermal pools meet the Rio Grande in a setting that’s remained unchanged since Apache times. Pack plenty of water and fuel—civilization feels genuinely remote out here.
