Kiamichi Mountains Wilderness Traverse

Deep in southeastern Oklahoma’s wildest country, this route cuts through the heart of the Kiamichi Mountains on a network of forest service roads and old logging tracks. You’ll cross Kiamichi Creek multiple times on rock slabs, navigate tight switchbacks carved into ridgelines, and pass abandoned homesteads from the 1930s. The trail connects LeFlore County’s remote corners, with the technical highlight being the descent into Little River Canyon where water runs year-round over limestone shelves.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossings and loose shale climbs. Stock vehicles handle it fine in dry conditions, but the water crossings can get sketchy after heavy rain. Best tackled April through October when creeks are manageable. No permits needed, but bring your own water despite the creek crossings – that limestone runoff tastes like chalk. Dispersed camping throughout with fire rings left by hunters. You earn solitude that’s rare in Oklahoma and some of the state’s best star-gazing.
