Rattlesnake Canyon Road
Badlands beauty in living color
Rattlesnake Canyon cuts deep into the Carrizo Badlands east of Ocotillo Wells, offering a spectacular journey through some of Southern California’s most dramatic desert geology. The route follows a sandy wash that gradually narrows into towering mud hills striped in burgundy, yellow, and purple — like driving through a geological rainbow. The real prize is Font’s Point overlook, where the entire Borrego Valley spreads out below like a golden carpet, and the hidden Native American petroglyphs tucked into side canyons.
This is moderate terrain suitable for stock 4WD vehicles with decent ground clearance. Sand can be deep after storms, and the narrow sections require careful navigation. Winter months offer perfect temperatures and blooming desert flowers, while summer is punishing. No permits needed, but carry plenty of water — the nearest services are 30 miles away in Borrego Springs. What you get is genuine solitude in one of California’s largest state parks, with camping opportunities that put you under some of the darkest skies in the state.
