Chemin de la Rivière Magpie — Haute-Côte-Nord Wilderness Road to Mingan Highlands

Into one of eastern Canada's wildest river canyons.

Difficult

The Magpie — Muteshekau-shipu in Innu — is one of eastern Canada’s great wild rivers, and the forestry road tracking its eastern bank gives overlanders a rare inland look at the Côte-Nord plateau before it drops spectacularly into the St. Lawrence lowlands. The route begins near Rivière-Saint-Jean on Quebec’s Highway 138 and climbs through black spruce and lichen uplands for roughly 80 kilometres before reaching the canyon headwaters area. Several river crossings on timber bridges require careful inspection; spring flood damage is common and repairs can lag by months. The final approach to the canyon viewpoints is rough single-track with erosion scarring and tight spruce overhangs.

This road is genuinely remote — expect no services, no cell coverage, and no other traffic except the occasional Hydro-Québec or forestry crew. High-clearance 4WD is mandatory; a proper skid plate setup is strongly recommended given the sharp shale rubble in the upper sections. Best window is mid-July through September after spring runoff settles. Bring all fuel from Sept-Îles or Baie-Comeau. The Magpie canyon viewpoints alone are worth every kilometre of mud and rock — this is one of the most dramatic river gorges in eastern Canada, almost entirely unknown outside of paddlers and Quebec hunting outfitters.
