Cordillera del Viento Border Mining Circuit
High-Andes copper country exploration
The Cordillera del Viento circuit follows abandoned and active copper mining roads through the high Andes near the Argentine border, threading between peaks that scrape 5,000 meters while following valleys carved by ancient glaciers. This route connects several remote mining camps including the historic workings around Mina La Disputada and newer exploration sites accessible only by serious 4WD, with spectacular high-altitude camping at Laguna del Maule where condors circle overhead and the night sky blazes with stars invisible at lower elevations.
Expert-level route demanding serious mountain driving experience, full emergency gear, and vehicles with proven reliability above 4,000 meters where oxygen levels drop significantly. Technical rock sections and loose scree climbs require low-range and careful line choice, while weather can turn deadly within hours. April through October offers the most stable conditions, though snow can close passes year-round. No services or cell coverage for the entire loop, but you get authentic high-Andes solitude and insight into Chile’s modern mining reality in one of South America’s most spectacular mountain settings.
