Cape Wrath Track — Durness to the Lighthouse via the Parph Peninsula

Britain's most remote road-end, locked behind a firing range.

Difficult

Cape Wrath is the northwest corner of mainland Britain and getting there is half the story. After a small passenger ferry across the Kyle of Durness, the Cape Wrath Track runs 11.5 miles across the Parph — an empty, peat-sodden plateau owned and managed by the Ministry of Defence as a live firing range. The track is unsurfaced estate road: deep peat ruts, boulder sections, bog crossings, and one dramatic descent to the lighthouse perched 122 metres above the Atlantic. The Cló Mór cliffs — Britain’s highest sea cliffs at 281 metres — drop off to the north and the view from the lighthouse on a clear day takes in the Orkney Islands. When the range is active, nobody passes. Full stop.

Access is genuinely controlled by the MoD and the Cape Wrath Ferry operation — check firing schedules at the Durness Tourist Information Centre before you even get on the boat, as the range closes without warning. A minibus operates seasonally for foot passengers, but private 4WD access requires coordination and is not always permitted; verify current policy directly with the MoD range officer. Vehicle must handle deep peat bog and loose rock — a stock high-clearance 4WD is the minimum. No fuel on the peninsula, no cell service. No camping on the range. This is one of those drives that sits in a category of its own — Britain’s end of the road, literally.
