Bealach na Bà Back Country — Lochcarron to Applecross via Coire nan Arr Estate Track

Mainland Britain's sharpest ascent.

Moderate

The Bealach na Bà — Pass of the Cattle — has been worked by drovers, military surveyors, and now overlanders who want the sharpest ascent in mainland Britain. From the A896 junction outside Lochcarron, the tarmac quickly gives way to character: unguarded hairpin bends, 20% gradients, and a final push through the rocky jaws of Coire nan Arr before the plateau opens up with views across to Skye, Raasay, and on a clear day, the Outer Hebrides. The descent into Applecross village is gentler but no less exposed, dropping past the ancient walled garden and onto the shore of the Inner Sound.

This is not a technical 4×4 route in the rock-crawling sense — the surface is tarmac — but the narrow width, sheer drops, and unpredictable weather demand a confident driver and a vehicle that won’t boil over on a sustained steep climb. Snow gates close the pass October through April in hard winters; check NatureScot and Highland Council road status before you go. Fuel up in Lochcarron — there’s nothing until Shieldaig or Torridon. Wild camping on the Applecross peninsula is world-class, and the Applecross Inn at the bottom is worth every penny after a cold night on the hill.
