Glenbrittle Campsite — Cuillin Base Camp on the Shore

Established Campground

Glenbrittle Campsite sits at the foot of the Black Cuillin ridge, run by the Macrae family and one of the most famous camps in Scotland for good reason. You pitch on rough grass with Loch Brittle in front of you and Britain’s gnarliest mountain skyline behind. The campsite has toilets, showers, a small shop selling gas canisters and basic supplies, and a drying room — things that matter when the Skye weather turns. It gets busy in summer, especially July and August, but it never feels like a holiday park. The clientele are climbers, ridge walkers, and overlanders who know what they came for.

The single-track road down Glen Brittle from the A863 is roughly 7 miles of narrow tarmac — fine for most overlanders but worth knowing if you’re running a wide trailer. No advance booking system historically, first-come basis, though verify current policy ahead of your trip. Road surface to the site is paved throughout.

Black Cuillin at your back, loch at your feet.
