Old Man of Storr — Isle of Skye Rock Pinnacle Viewpoint
The Old Man of Storr is a 50-metre free-standing pinnacle of basalt that broke away from the Storr cliff face thousands of years ago. Standing in the shadow of it feels genuinely otherworldly — jagged black rock stabbing out of bog and heather, with the Inner Sound and mainland mountains laid out behind you. The car park sits right off the A855 north of Portree and it draws serious crowds in summer, so hit it early morning or late evening if you want the place to yourself. No vehicle challenge getting here — the approach road is fully paved.
The walk to the base takes roughly 45–60 minutes return on a maintained path that can get slippery in wet weather. Snow can linger into April on the upper slopes. Cell signal is patchy on the hillside. Worth every step for the views over Loch Leathan and the Sound.
Scotland's most iconic rock pinnacle.
