Trotternish Ridge — Isle of Skye Northern Spine Viewpoint

The Trotternish Ridge runs roughly 23 miles along the northern spine of Skye, defined by ancient landslips that produced the bizarre rock formations at the Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr. The main road-accessible viewpoint sits along the A855 between Staffin and Uig — pull off at the upper hairpins and you’re looking out over layered basalt escarpments dropping into green townships below, with Lewis and Harris visible on clear days. It hits different at dawn when the mist hangs in the corries.

The A855 is fully paved but narrow with passing places — trailers are manageable but slow. Summer traffic is heavy from June through August. The ridge itself is exposed and weather changes fast; if you’re hiking up, don’t get caught in cloud without navigation kit. No facilities at the roadside viewpoints — Staffin village has a small shop.
