Durness — Kyle of Durness Ferry Crossing and Far North Resupply
Durness sits at the very top-left corner of mainland Scotland and it earns its place on every serious North Coast 500 overland route. There’s a small filling station, a post office, a Co-op, and a few places to grab food — all the resupply basics before you push east across Sutherland or take the ferry across the Kyle to Cape Wrath. The landscape is vast and stark: white shell-sand beaches, limestone grassland, and peat bog pressing in from every direction.
The Cape Wrath Ferry is seasonal (roughly April–October), passenger-only, and connects to a minibus that runs the 11-mile military track to the lighthouse. Vehicles don’t cross. Fuel availability in Durness is limited in winter — top up before you arrive if heading in off-season. Cell signal here is patchy at best. Stock up on water if you’re heading into Sutherland backcountry.
Last fuel before the edge of Britain.
