Camping Laguna del Maule

Dispersed Camping

This remote high-altitude camping area sits on the shores of Laguna del Maule, Chile’s largest natural lake at 2,200 meters elevation. The stark volcanic landscape offers unobstructed views of snow-capped peaks reflecting in the deep blue waters. No facilities exist here—just open ground where you can pitch wherever the wind isn’t howling. The setting is raw and exposed, with weather that can shift from blazing sun to snow squalls in hours.

Access via Ruta 115 from Talca requires high-clearance 4WD for the final 15 kilometers of rough volcanic gravel. The road deteriorates significantly after the CONAF checkpoint. Best season is December through March when snow clears from the access road. Bring extra fuel and water—there’s nothing out here but the lake and endless sky.
