Chilcotin River Road via Riske Creek

Historic cattle drive route through Chilcotin plateau

Moderate

The old Chilcotin River Road from Riske Creek follows the original cattle drive routes that shaped BC’s interior ranching culture. This gravel and dirt track winds along the Chilcotin River through vast grassland plateaus, passing historic ranch sites and First Nations village ruins. The route crosses several creek beds and includes a notorious ford at Big Creek that can be impassable during spring melt, making it a true test of timing and water-reading skills.

Moderate difficulty with occasional technical sections around creek crossings and washouts. High-clearance 4WD recommended, with recovery gear essential for the water crossings. Best tackled May through October when water levels drop. No permits required, but respect private ranch lands. Fuel up in Williams Lake before heading out—nearest services are 100+ miles apart. The reward is pure Chilcotin solitude and some of the most authentic cowboy country left in BC.
