Taylor Fork Road to Taylor Hilgard Lodge
Madison Range alpine access via historic logging road
The Taylor Fork cuts deep into Montana’s Madison Range, following an old logging road that climbs from sagebrush flats at 6,400 feet to alpine meadows above 8,000 feet. You’ll cross Taylor Creek multiple times before reaching the turnoff to Hilgard Lodge, where the road gets technical with loose rock and steep grades. The route passes through some of the finest elk country in the lower 48, with sweeping views of the Spanish Peaks and opportunities to explore dozens of unmarked mining claims from the 1890s gold rush.
This is a moderate to difficult route requiring high-clearance 4WD and low-range gearing for the final climbs. Summer and early fall offer the best conditions, though snow can linger at elevation well into July. No permits required, but bring extra fuel and water — the nearest services are 40 miles back in Big Sky. Multiple dispersed camping spots along Taylor Creek make this perfect for a weekend basecamp to explore the Madison backcountry on foot.
