Marienfluss Valley — Hartmann’s Valley Floor Dispersed Camp
Hartmann’s Valley runs parallel to the Marienfluss, separated by a ridge of ancient granite. The valley floor opens up into a broad, flat gravel pan flanked by towering orange dunes to the west and the Hartmann Mountains to the east — one of the most visually dramatic free-camp landscapes in Namibia. You’re inside the Hartmann Valley Communal Conservancy here, so travel is permitted for self-sufficient overlanders. No facilities, no signage, no other rigs most nights. Desert-adapted elephant and lion move through regularly — treat this country with respect.
Access requires 4WD and solid desert driving skills. The corrugated tracks off the main Kaokoland route are punishing. Come fully fueled from Opuwo — there’s no resupply once you leave town. Best travelled May through September when the pan is dry and temps are survivable. Flash floods can close the valley completely after summer rains — do not attempt in January or February without confirmed conditions.
Dunes, elephants, and zero other campers.
